Deus isn’t working?

It’s almost always one of these. They are sorted by how often they happen, so start at the top.

You haven’t clicked the Deus icon on the music tab

Chrome lets an extension hear a tab only after you click its icon on that tab. Until then the visual waits under a dim veil. After you reload the page or restart Chrome, the click is needed again. This is Chrome’s rule; Deus can’t skip it.

  1. Open the tab where the music plays, for example open.spotify.com.
  2. Click the Deus icon in Chrome’s toolbar.
  3. On Spotify, YouTube Music and Yandex Music the cover turns into a live visual. On other sites, press Visualize this tab in the menu that opens.

You can’t find the Deus icon

Chrome hides new extensions in the Extensions menu, the puzzle-piece icon to the right of the address bar.

  1. Click the puzzle-piece icon (Extensions).
  2. Click the pin next to Deus so the icon stays in the toolbar.
  3. Now click the Deus icon on the music tab.

The music plays on another device

If Spotify sends the music to your phone, a speaker or the desktop app (Spotify Connect), the browser tab itself stays silent, and Deus has nothing to hear.

  1. In the Spotify web player, open the device menu next to the volume control.
  2. Choose this web browser as the device.
  3. Click the Deus icon on that tab again.

You’re using a desktop app or a phone

Deus is a Chrome extension: it works in Chrome on a computer. It can’t reach the Spotify, YouTube Music or Yandex Music apps, or Chrome on Android and iPhone.

  1. Open the web player in Chrome on your computer: open.spotify.com, music.youtube.com or music.yandex.ru.
  2. Start the music there and click the Deus icon.

The tab is muted or the track is paused

Deus draws what the tab actually plays. A paused track, a muted tab or zero volume in the player means silence, and the visual rests.

  1. Press play in the player and turn its volume up.
  2. If the tab shows a crossed-out speaker, right-click the tab and choose Unmute site.

The sound comes from another tab

Deus listens to one tab: the one where you clicked its icon. If the music plays somewhere else, that tab is silent for Deus.

  1. Switch to the tab that is playing: Chrome shows a speaker on it.
  2. Click the Deus icon there.

The visual is already open in another tab

Deus plays in one place at a time. When you start it on a new tab, the visual on the old one stops.

  1. Close the visualizer tab you don’t need, or press Move the visual here when Deus offers it.
  2. Click the Deus icon on the tab you want to see.

The page can’t be captured

Chrome doesn’t let extensions hear its own pages (chrome:// pages, settings, the new tab page) or the Chrome Web Store.

  1. Play the music on a regular website and start Deus there.

The visual stutters or the computer gets hot

Some presets are heavy shaders. On a weak or busy graphics card they drop frames.

  1. In the Deus menu, set the quality to Medium or Low, or keep automatic quality on.
  2. Pick a lighter preset: Canvas and Oscilloscope presets are the easiest on the graphics card.
  3. Check that hardware acceleration is on in Chrome: Settings, System, Use graphics acceleration when available.

None of this helped
