Hexagon Spectrum 3D Gray

Watch Hexagon Spectrum 3D Gray live in the browser

A tilted field of hexagonal columns seen from above at an angle, in graphite and silver. Columns rise and sink with the music, their tops lighter when they are loud, with faint glowing edges and trails, while rings ripple outward across the floor from the centre.

It is the gray version of Hexagon Spectrum 3D: the same geometry and motion, with colour reduced to cool greys, and highlights that depend on intensity alone. Each column is assigned a frequency band mostly by its distance from the centre, low bands in the middle and high bands at the rim, with some variation around the circle.

What it reacts to

• Spectrum: each column rises with its band, then falls back slowly
• Bass pulses: the central columns jump, the view swells a little, and a ring ripples across the floor
• Treble pulses: quick fine rings and small sparks on the tops of high-band columns
• Mids: a sweeping band lifts columns and the camera sways
• Overall loudness: speeds up the slow drift of the view

Music that suits it

Electronic music with a clear kick and crisp hi-hats, such as minimal techno or house, keeps the bass rings and treble sparks alternating.
