Gyroid
Watch Gyroid live in the browser
A slow flight through a bone-white lattice: one curved sheet that splits space into two interlocking labyrinths, pierced with windows so layer after layer shows through. Glowing veins run over its surface, and a thin-film sheen appears at grazing angles.
The shape is a triply periodic minimal surface, the family of soap-film-like structures found, for example, in butterfly wing scales. Schoen's gyroid is the base; the bass pulls it toward the Schwarz P surface and the mids toward the diamond surface. The camera follows one of the gyroid's straight open channels, so it never runs into a wall.
What it reacts to
- Bass: morphs the lattice toward the Schwarz P surface, opens wider windows and brightens the veins
- Mids: blend in the diamond surface
- Overall loudness: thickens the sheet, and the flight only moves forward while music plays
- Kick drum: a shell of light races out from the camera through the lattice and the veins pulse
- Treble: shifts the vein colour and adds a sparkle to the haze
Tune
Cell size scales the lattice, Iridescence sets the strength of the thin-film sheen, and Veins picks the glow colour.
Music that suits it
Bass-heavy electronic music with a regular kick, such as techno or dubstep, shows both the morphing and the shells of light.
