Kaleidoscope
Watch Kaleidoscope live in the browser
A kaleidoscope of mirrored petals in violet, cyan, coral and amber, looking down a tunnel of rounded square rings. The number of petals changes about every twelve seconds, between four and ten, with a smooth fade, and the whole pattern turns slowly.
It is a port of a Synesthesia kaleidoscope shader. A narrow slice of a raymarched tunnel is rendered first, a camera gliding forward through stacked rings, and that slice is then mirrored around the centre to fill the screen. The flight, the twist and the petal changes run on time, so the picture keeps moving even in quiet passages.
What it reacts to
- Overall loudness and treble hits: shift the colours further along the palette
- Bass: turns the rings a little
- Beats: push the rings inward by a small amount
- The audio response is gentle: most of the motion runs on its own
Music that suits it
Calm music, such as ambient, downtempo or chill electronica, suits its steady flight and gradual colour shifts.
