Rose Window
Watch Rose Window live in the browser
A gothic rose window seen from inside a dark nave. The tracery has twelve-fold symmetry: a central oculus, a ring of twelve pointed petals, twelve larger arches each split into two lights with a small roundel, and an outer ring of twenty-four small lights, all in ruby, cobalt, emerald, amber and violet glass between stone and lead.
The window plays the spectrum in colour: every pane is lit from behind by one of 32 spectrum bins, bass in the centre and treble at the rim. Sunbeams carry the colours of the panes into the dusty air of the nave, and dust motes drift outward along them.
What it reacts to
- Spectrum: each pane glows with its own bin, from the bass in the oculus to the treble at the rim
- Kick drum: like a cloud leaving the sun, the window and its beams flare
- Loudness: brightens the sunlight overall and moves the beams and dust
- Treble and hi-hats: make the dust motes glint
Tune
Glass gain sets how strongly the panes respond to the spectrum, and Sunbeams and Dust set the strength of the light shafts and the floating motes.
Music that suits it
Choral, organ or orchestral music with rich harmonics lights the window from centre to rim, and a kick drum adds the flares.
