Hypercube Disco Soup

A frame of the Hypercube Disco Soup preset in Deus.

A neon tunnel of nested boxes, repeated on a grid in every direction and folded into an eight-way kaleidoscope around the line of flight. The camera flies steadily forward while bands of brighter pink light sweep through the structure.

Each box is a small iterated function system: space is folded with absolute values and rotated five times over, so one box becomes a recursive cluster of shards. Instead of hard surfaces, the scene is rendered as volumetric glow, light gathered along each ray as it passes near the geometry. Despite the name, the geometry is three-dimensional.

What it reacts to

  • Bass and mids: the bass enlarges the boxes and tightens the grid, the mids twist the folds
  • Onsets and bass hits: push the folds apart and flash bands of pink light through the tunnel
  • Spectrum and treble: each region of the structure reads its own frequency band, and the treble adds sparkle
  • Notes: the colour of the notes playing now tints the whole tunnel
  • Loudness: speeds the flight and brightens the image

Music that suits it

Disco, house and funk with clear onsets and melodic lines suit it best: the drums flash the bands and the harmony colours the tunnel.
